How Often Should Pest Control Be Carried Out?

One of the questions we hear most often is how frequently a home actually needs pest control. The honest answer is that it depends on the property, but for the majority of Sydney homes a general pest treatment once a year does the job.

Why once a year suits most homes

Sydney's warm, humid summers give insects a long breeding season, and the milder western suburbs are not far behind. A general pest treatment applied in late spring, just before activity peaks, keeps cockroaches, spiders, ants and silverfish in check right through the busy months. The residual products used in a professional treatment keep working for months after application, which is what makes an annual visit effective.

When more frequent treatments make sense

Some homes benefit from a treatment every six months rather than every twelve. These tend to be:

  • Homes backing onto bushland or reserves
  • Properties near creeks, canals or other water
  • Older houses with plenty of gaps and entry points
  • Homes with a history of German cockroaches

If you are constantly seeing pests despite an annual treatment, that is a sign the schedule or the approach needs adjusting.

Termites are a separate schedule

It is worth being clear that general pest control does not protect against termites. A dedicated timber pest inspection is recommended at least once a year, and more often for higher risk homes, in line with Australian Standard AS 3660. The two services work together but are not the same thing.

A word on fixed contracts

A good technician tailors the frequency to your home rather than pushing a one size fits all plan. If you are quoted monthly treatments for a standard house with no active infestation, it is fair to ask why. For most families, an annual general treatment plus a yearly termite inspection is the sensible baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a single treatment enough to clear an active infestation?

For a general problem, usually yes, though heavy German cockroach or flea infestations may need a follow up visit to catch the next generation.

What time of year is best?

Late spring is ideal because it gets ahead of the summer surge, but a treatment at any time of year still provides strong protection.
